How to prepare your garden for more biodiversity

Jan 27, 2025Chantal Kolleman

The new year is a perfect time to make your garden biodiversity-friendly. Because more biodiversity in your garden not only creates a more vibrant environment but also helps maintain healthy ecosystems. In this column, I offer practical tips to prepare your garden for birds, insects, and other animals.

Tips:

  1. Add shelters: Nest boxes and insect hotels are essential for providing a safe place for animals. Place nest boxes in a quiet spot, out of reach of predators, and ensure insect hotels are sheltered.
  2. Use native plants: Native plants are better adapted to the local climate and attract more native animal species. Think of flowers that produce nectar for bees or shrubs with berries for birds.
  3. Provide water: Water sources are crucial, especially during dry periods. Add drinking and feeding bowls to your garden, and refresh the water regularly to keep it clean and safe.

Reduce your ecological footprint

Use recycled materials when furnishing your garden. Think of compost for your plants or repurpose old ceramic pots. This reduces your ecological footprint.
